Recognizing common signs of a scam could help you avoid failing for one.
“Gloucester County wants to keep our residents safe and that includes scams via phone or the internet,” said Director Frank J. DiMarco. “You can never be immune to getting scammed so stay alert and report suspicious activity.”
Gloucester County residents have reportedly been receiving calls regarding “suspicious/fraudulent activity” on their social security card.
“Always question when someone is seeking personal information. The Social Security Administration and other agencies that have secure information will never call you for information. Your personal identity can easily be compromised by the activity of scammers,” added Director DiMarco.
If you ever have a concern or questions concerning a suspicious email, text or call, please reach out to the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-242-5846 or visit their website.
Here’s how to avoid scams that may be targeting you:
- Don’t give your personal or financial information in response to a request that you didn’t expect.
- Resist the pressure to act immediately.
- Know how scammers tell you to pay. Never pay someone who insists you pay with a gift card or by using a money transfer service.
- Stop and talk to someone you trust.
