[ARCHIVED] The Gloucester County Mega Site opens sensory room in new building

(Sewell, NJ)—The Gloucester County Mega Vaccination Site has established a new sensory room in its second location for individuals who need to receive their vaccination in a quieter space.

The Mega Site began using the Business and Corporate Center (BAC) on the campus of Rowan College of South Jersey on February 6, 2021 to accommodate seniors and the disabled. The building is currently serving over 900 individuals daily.

“Soon after we opened this building to seniors, we realized that there was a population in our community that needed this space to receive the vaccine in a quiet, calm space,” said Director Robert M. Damminger.

“Our goal at the site is to make sure everyone has a great, safe experience while they’re receiving their COVID-19 vaccine. We are here to serve our citizens, and establishing this sensory room allows us to continue to serve all New Jersey citizens appropriately,” said Senate President Steve Sweeney.

The site partnered with Dr. Jennifer LeComte, Director of Rowan Integrated Special Needs (RISN) Center to create a safe space for individuals with physical, developmental, behavioral/emotion or sensory impaired disabilities.

The space has been decked out with features including a dimmed lights, colored lights, and activities specifically designed to calm individuals who may be feeling overwhelmed. There is also pet therapy available on certain days.

Everything is sanitized and cleaned after each use.

“The Gloucester County Mega Site is meticulous about accessibility and providing assistance throughout the entire process,” added Senate President Steve Sweeney. “Whether it be having ESL and ASL experts on speed dial or golf carts and wheelchairs to assist the elderly, they have truly thought of everything.”

“We take a lot of pride in beginning an inclusive county. We believe that serving our residents is not only the right way, but the only way,” said Commissioner Jim Jefferson.

The Gloucester County Mega Vaccination Center is located at the Rowan College of South Jersey, Gloucester Campus at 1400 Tanyard Road in Sewell, NJ.
