Road Maintenance

The Department of Public Works highest priority is to provide the needed routine maintenance and improvements of the County's 410 miles of road and 85 Bridges. We take pride in making sure that we maintain a safe and secure County public roadway system for various modes of transportation. Both our Highway and Engineering Divisions provide specific maintenance and for your convenience, we have provided separated lists of their routine maintenance along with a contact number. The Public Works Department only maintains County roadways.

Highway Division

Routine maintenance Includes:

  • 24-hour emergency response
  • Cleaning and maintenance of drainage structures (such as, culverts, catch basins, ditches and gutters)
  • Emergency flood control
  • Guide rail repair
  • Mowing and tree trimming of County intersections to alleviate site obstructions
  • Pothole patching and crack filling of asphalt pavements
  • Road paving
  • Shoulder maintenance
  • Snow and Ice Control
  • Street sweeping

  • If you have a true emergency, please call 911 and someone on-call will be contacted; if not, please call back during regular hours

Engineering Division

Routine maintenance includes:

  • Upkeep of existing traffic signals, signing and striping

Traffic Signals

A request for a new traffic signal has to come from your local municipality. Your local municipality provides us with information that is needed to conduct a study. A traffic signal is approved based on whether it meets the requirements given to us by the NJ Department of Transportation (DOT).
