GCEMS & Chief Awarded Top Honor by New Jersey
The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Office of Emergency Medical Services and the New Jersey Emergency Medical Services Council selected the Gloucester County Emergency Medical Services (GCEMS) as the recipient of the 2010 New Jersey Public EMS Agency of the Year Award. The award was presented at the NJ EMS banquet on Friday, November 12, 2010.
In addition to the 2010 New Jersey Public EMS Agency of the Year Award, GCEMS Chief Any Lovell received the 2010 EMS Administrator of the Year Award. This marks the first time in the 12 year history of the awards program that both awards were bestowed to the same EMS agency and the first time a southern New Jersey EMS administrator has been honored.
Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney said, "When the county began the regionalized EMS system in 2007 it was not without controversy. Many people doubted a county's ability to deliver emergency medical services."
"I am proud that we have converted the doubters into believers in this shared service, and I am proud of our staff that is committed to patient care and professionalism. Gloucester County is the first in the State to regionalize this crucial life saving public service and GCEMS has consistently maintained an average response time of under 6 minutes", said Sweeney. Sweeney said that GCEMS saves the participating municipalities $2.8 million in avoided costs annually.
A response time of 8 minutes 59 seconds or less, 90% of the time is the measure identified as the Gold Standard of Excellence by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Service.
"To be selected as the number one public agency from throughout the entire State of New Jersey for this very prestigious award speaks volumes beyond the quality of care delivered daily by our dedicated and skilled staff", said Freeholder Jean DuBois, Liaison to the Department of Emergency Response.
GCEMS currently operates 23 ambulances from 10 EMS stations and services 15 of the county's municipalities, with a staff of 180 employees and 30 interns. Their average response time remains under 6 minutes and they will respond to over 14000 requests for service in 2010.
