Gloucester County First in NJ to Install Solar Panels on Traffic Signals Solar Operated Flashing Lights will Cut Costs to Municipalities

(Mantua Twp., NJ) - Gloucester County will be the first in New Jersey to install solar panels on flashing traffic signals to reduce energy costs to municipalities.  Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Deputy Director Bob Damminger announced today that a federal grant through the Department of Energy will cover the costs to purchase solar panels to be placed on 34 flashing signals throughout the county.

"Municipalities pay for the cost of electric service to run traffic signals and flashing signals and the typical electric cost is between $600 and $1,000 per year depending on the type of traffic signal.  Through this solar initiative we will be helping to cut that cost in half and we will be doing something positive for our environment," said Freeholder Director Sweeney.

Sweeney said, "Safety is always our main concern.  During the night and when there is not sufficient sun the flashing signals will work off of electricity, but when the sun shines these energy saving solar panels will be saving taxpayers, money."

Today the Freeholders unveiled the first location that a solar panel was placed on a flashing signal; at the intersection of Barnsboro and Jefferson Roads in Mantua.

The county received a grant from the Department of Energy to purchase the solar panels and the county's traffic signal crew will install them.  It will take approximately 8 months to complete the project.  The County will begin with the flashing signals and then move to identify and work on traffic signals throughout the remainder of the County.

Freeholder Deputy Damminger said, "We have been planning this project and we are excited to begin.  The county's signal crew will be placing these solar panels on flashing signals in fifteen municipalities throughout the county and we will continue to look for grants and technologies that help us use less electric and more alternative energy."    Damminger is the liaison to the Department of Public Works.
Regardless of a traffic signals'location in New Jersey (local road, county route, state highway, interstate) the municipality where the signal or flasher is located are the responsible party for the cost of its electric.
