Upgrades to Aquatics Center at GCIT Complete

(Deptford, NJ) – Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Joseph A. Brigandi, Jr. announced today that the Aquatics Center upgrade at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT) was completed on schedule.  The facility opened to swimmers on September 11, 2006.  The project included major changes to the filtration, HVAC, and electrical systems.    The Center opened in July 1995 and has hosted major East Coast Swim events over the last 11 years. The Aquatic Center has been closed for several phases since 2005 due to renovations and repairs.   “The Freeholder Board made a commitment to fully fund the project in this year’s budget.  The Aquatic Center at GCIT receives large use from the community and is the largest heated swimming pool in South Jersey,” said Freeholder Director Sweeney.  “Many organizations utilize the pool, which gives our kids an opportunity to participate in a healthy activity.” Sweeney stated.  “The GCIT Swim Club has produced multiple Olympic Trial, National and Junior National Qualifiers, as well as numerous local and regional champions, since it was formed in 1994, it’s a fantastic organization.”   The county budgeted $1.6 million for these improvements.    Superintendent Frederick Keating said, "We are most appreciative that the Freeholder Board recognized the need for improvements at the Center.     Freeholder Brigandi, Liaison to Education, said, “The GCIT Aquatics Center serves local swims teams, Gloucester County high school teams, GCIT students, and Gloucester County residents who elect membership in the Fitness and Aquatics Center.  By investing in the Center we will be able to serve the Gloucester County community for years to come."

An Open House at GCIT is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The public is invited to tour the facility, see our performing arts program, enjoy taste treats from our School of Culinary Arts, public safety demonstrations, automotive displays, Demonstrations by the School of Construction Technology, Cosmetology displays, and much more.  GCIT is located at 1360 Tanyard Road, Sewell
