County Adds Two New Serv-A-Tray Vans & Routes To Increase Meals to Homebound
(Woodbury, NJ) – In the coming weeks Gloucester County will be adding two new Serv-A-Tray vans and expanding routes that serve meals to homebound senior citizens in the county. Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney and Freeholder Helene Reed announced this initiative today with the purchase of two new vans that will help deliver an additional 52 meals a day to residents who may have otherwise gone without a hot meal.
“The Freeholders made a commitment in this year’s budget to fund two additional vans and two additional drivers to increase the amount of meals we can serve to our homebound,” stated Freeholder Director Sweeney. “By adding these vans we will be adding two new routes to the Serv-A-Tray program that will result in an additional 260 meals served a week. This will bring our wait list down and increase the number of meals we deliver to homebound persons a week,” Sweeney said.
The Freeholders said that the new trucks will service a new route in Glassboro, Sewell and Turnersville, and one in Thorofare, Mantua, Wenonah and Westville. Each truck can deliver 26 meals a day. The current routes for the Serv-A-Tray program service the Williamstown area and the Paulsboro, Mantua, Swedesboro and Mullica Hill region.
The county budgeted an additional $84,000 for the two vans and two additional drivers for the program this year.
Currently, the county delivers approximately 266 meals a week with its two vans and help from volunteer drivers. The meals are prepared at Auletto’s and assembled for delivery at the county’s nutrition sites five days a week and loaded on to the vans and into volunteers’ cars. The meals are delivered between 10 am and 1 pm in order to keep the meals at the proper temperature. Frozen meals are delivered on Fridays so seniors can heat them up and have hot meals over the weekend.

“A good diet is essential to good health, and that allows our seniors to live independently,” said Freeholder Helene Reed. “Living independently with dignity as one ages is what our seniors want and deserve.”
Reed stated, “This program is important to so many seniors. Serv-A-Tray gives them the freedom to live at home without the worry of finding a way to get to the supermarket, shopping, and preparing a hot, nutritious meal.” Freeholder Reed serves as the liaison to the Department of Health and Senior Services.
The Freeholders noted that in addition to the county vans and employees, more than 80 dedicated volunteers representing various churches and organizations throughout the county volunteer their time and use their cars to deliver meals each weekday.
“We welcome new volunteers to help deliver meals to the homebound, even with the county’s increased vans and routes, there are always more seniors we could provide a hot meal with if there were more volunteers on the road,” said Freeholder Director Sweeney. “We have a wonderful partnership with the volunteers who help deliver hot meals and we truly appreciate them, they help make this program a success,” Sweeney remarked.

A $1.25 donation is requested per meal per day to offset the lunch program. Residents are never refused for their ability to pay.
