June is ‘Adopt A Shelter Cat Month’ Renovations at Animal Shelter put cage space at a premium – Adopt a Pet Today
(Clayton) – Renovations to replace the kennel floors in the Gloucester County Animal Shelter started well before the usual mid-summertime rush of animals coming in the shelter; however the mid-summer rush came early. Freeholders are asking residents to consider the Animal Shelter first when adopting a cat or dog.
“June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and we are encouraging residents to think of our Shelter first when they make the decision to adopt a pet,” said Freeholder Director Sweeney. “We have been renovating the shelter since the start of the year to beat the summer rush of stray and surrendered animals that we anticipate, but the rush is coming early this year,” Sweeney said.
Renovations to the Animal Shelter have included interior and exterior renovations to the kennels and cat rooms and the kennel floors are being completely replaced. The renovations are expected to be completed by July.
As of Monday, June 5th, the county had 70 cats and 20 dogs available for adoption. The Shelter is near/at capacity.
“Adopting a pet from our shelter is probably the best bargain in town,” said Freeholder Frank DiMarco, liaison to the Shelter. “Not only do you get unconditional love, but your cat or kitten will be already spayed or neutered, tested, wormed and vaccinated for $95 and your dog or puppy will be altered, wormed, heartworm tested and vaccinated for $125,” said DiMarco. “Our shelter staff is helpful and knowledgeable and will assist in getting you the right animal for your household,” the Freeholder said.
