COUNTY ASKS FOR PHOTOGRAPHY FOR TIME CAPSULE Your photo could be placed in the 2005 Time Capsule
(Woodbury, NJ) - The Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders is seeking photography from residents depicting life in the county in 2005. The photography may be selected to be placed in the time capsule the county is planning on erecting later this year to commemorate the renovations to the Old Courthouse and the opening of an 1885 time capsule.
"We feel photography is a way for our citizens to show what life looks like today to the residents of one hundred years from now," said Freeholder Director Sweeney, "This call for photographs is an opportunity to tell future generations our story."
The time capsule project began late last year, during courthouse renovations, when a county worker discovered that the 1885 cornerstone of the Old Courthouse contained a time capsule. A committee was assembled and is making plans for this fall to open the 1885 time capsule and to dedicate a 2005 time capsule, which will be sealed for the next 100 years. An important content of the 2005 time capsule will be the photographs representing Gloucester County of today.
"As the committee was considering items to be placed in the time capsule, we realized we didn't want to end up with volumes of written text," said Freeholder Director Sweeney. "We decided that we could share with future generations through photographs and the stories that they tell. When I look at the old photographs of the courthouse I can feel the history, the men are wearing hats, Broad Street is a dirt road, and transportation is a horse and buggy."
Sweeney said that the committee will select the photographs to be placed in the 2005 time capsule. Photographs should capture the culture and traditions of Gloucester County in 2005. Up to three photographs per resident can be submitted digitally (as jpeg attachments) to email@example.com or mailed or dropped off at any of the Gloucester County Library System Branches. Residents should include their name and address with their photo and also note the location of the photograph, and detail any other important aspects of the art. Submissions will be accepted until August 31, 2005.
"We are all looking forward to opening the time capsule from 1885 later this year and honoring an era past," said Sweeney. "At the same time, we will show the people of the future what present day Gloucester County looks like. The 2005 time capsule affords us a chance to record our own history, and the 2005 photos capture our culture today."
