Energy Assistance for Older Adults Available

(Woodbury, NJ) – Gloucester County’s Division of Senior Services/Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ARDC) is supporting older adults with all assistance programs that help with energy bills.  Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert Damminger and Freeholder Jim Jefferson said that applications will be taken for the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) now through April 30, 2016.

Director Damminger said, “LIHEAP assists low-income households with their electric, gas, oil and other types of fuel.  This critical federal program can make a big difference to help residents who struggle to keep warm in the winter because they cannot afford their energy bills.”

Freeholder Jim Jefferson said that staff will also screen an individual’s eligibility for the Universal Service Funds (USF), a program created by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to help assist with electric and natural gas costs.

Jefferson said, “Every resident should have a warm place to call home this winter. We want our seniors who are having a hard time making ends meet get the assistance they need.” Jefferson is the Freeholder Liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services that includes the Division of Senior Services.

The Freeholders said that in addition to senior and disabled residents, low-income families can visit www.mynjhelps.org to see what programs they may be eligible for and apply online for assistance.

Seniors and residents with disabilities can call the Division of Senior Services/Aging and Disability Resource Connection at 856-384-6900 for more information and to learn about the proper documentation needed to apply.
