County Kicks off ‘Shop, Dine, Go Local’ Campaign

(Swedesboro, NJ) – Gloucester County Freeholders, Chamber of Commerce members and a local business owner today joined at Sweetesboro Pastry Shoppe on Kings Highway to announce the county's 2014 Shop, Dine, Go Local campaign that is designed to encourage residents to spend their money at local small businesses in the days leading up to the holiday shopping season.

Freeholder Director Damminger said, "We have all heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but we all have the chance to lift up our local economy by shopping, dining and going local for services.  We are taking a pledge today that we will shop local, dine local and spend our dollars on local services to promote jobs, the economy, and keep our dollars in our community."

Freeholder Heather Simmons said that the campaign would promote local small businesses and ask residents to pledge to shop, dine and spend their money on local services throughout the season and on Saturday, November 29.  The program is a partnership with the County Department of Economic Development, the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce and small business owners and operators.

“The Sweetesboro Pastry Shoppe is the perfect example of a small business that helps anchor our downtowns and attracts customers to shop and buy local.  When we encourage our residents to shop local, this is what we are talking about; patronizing our small businesses who are our neighbors and who have a vested interest in the success of our community,” Simmons said. Freeholder Simmons is the Freeholder Liaison to the Department of Economic Development.

Simmons explained that the County and Chamber of Commerce first started the Shop, Dine, Go Local campaign in 2012 and have witnessed great results from business owners and residents.  A survey conducted in 2013 by the county showed that 37% of residents who pledged to shop local spent $200 or more locally on the day after Black Friday.

Freeholder Adam Taliaferro said, “I am proud to take the Shop, Dine, Go Local Pledge today.  Our County is comprised of over 5,000 retail, service, general merchandise, professional services, restaurant, and repair services.  When we as residents choose to spend our hard-earned money at these small businesses we are directly investing in the success of our community,”

Karen Morrison, Owner of Sweetsboro Pastry Shoppe said,  “We believe in being a part of the community and that the Shop, Dine and Go Local will help build a momentum leading up to the holidays that will bring awareness to our customers of the importance small business plays in their lives.  As a small business owner is can be challenging to compete with the giant super-stores, but we as small businesses get to have a great relationship with our customers and provide them with a service that is far from generic.”
