13th Annual Gloucester County Military Service Medal Ceremony

109 County Veterans will be honored this Saturday

(West Deptford, NJ) – The Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders will host the 13th Annual presentation of the Gloucester County Military Service Medal on Saturday, Sep. 28, 2013, 11 am, at RiverWinds Community Center in West Deptford.

Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger said that 109 medals presented (12 posthumously) with approximately 300 people in attendance.

“We hold this ceremony to honor our veterans who reside in Gloucester County as a small token of thanks for their service,” said Damminger.  “Whether our veterans served in wartime or peacetime, they took a tremendous risk of their own personal safety in order to protect our nation and they deserve our gratitude,” Damminger stated.

Damminger said that the Gloucester County Military Service Medal was designed and commissioned by the Board of Freeholders in 2001 for all Gloucester County Veterans who have served on active duty in the military and received an honorable discharge.  Since that time, Gloucester County has presented 5,250 medals to the men and women who have so bravely served our nation.

Freeholder Deputy Director Giuseppe (Joe) Chila said, “Every day when we turn on the news we are reminded that our servicemen and women put their love of country above all else to serve. This medal shows that we do not forget about our military personnel during their service or after their honorable discharge.”   Deputy Director Chila is the Liaison to the County Office Veterans Affairs.

Chila said Gloucester County operates a full time Veterans Affairs Office; a full-time Gloucester County VA Health Clinic; and is home to the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery where over 2238 eligible veterans, their spouses or dependents have been laid to rest.

The ceremony is open to the public and should last approximately one hour.  Lt. Colonel Bill Vankat, USMC (retired) will present the medals to the veterans, the Semper Fidelis Detachment of the Marine Corps League will serve as Color Guard, Sergeant Major USA Christopher Di Tizio will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, Reverend Glenn D. Chaplin, Downer United Methodist Church of Williamstown will deliver the invocation and benediction.
