Gloucester County Presents 13th Annual Women’s Health Summit

Gloucester County Department of Health Senior & Disability Services is sponsoring the 13th Annual Women’s Health Summit, on Saturday, September 21st from 8 am to 12 noon.  The Women’s Health Summit will be held at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology, 1300 Tanyard Road in Sewell.

Freeholder Director Robert Damminger said that this free event promotes health awareness for women of all ages, as well as men and families. 

"Women take care of so many aspects of our families and community that it is important they focus on their own health and well being," said Director Damminger.  “The Summit offers free workshops, exhibitors, health screenings, refreshments, healthy snacks and door prizes.  If you are looking for tips on exercising, planning healthy meals, increasing healthy behaviors, learning to prepare for emergencies, decreasing stress, or simply looking for the latest information on health topics of interest, you can find it at the Women’s Health Summit.”

Freeholder Lyman Barnes said that residents can take advantage of the many free workshops, exhibits, information, and screenings provided through a variety of community-based local health care organizations, businesses, social service agencies and non-profit groups. 

Barnes said, “The 2013 Women’s Health Summit was designed to encourage women to foster healthy habits such as proper diet, exercise, regular screenings and checkups so they achieve a healthy future for themselves and their families. Women are often so busy taking care of others that they forget their own importance and health needs.”  Freeholder Barnes is the liaison to the Gloucester County Department of Health, Senior & Disability Services.

Free health screenings have been expanded to include:  Body Fat Analysis, Blood Pressure Screenings, Cholesterol and Glucose Screenings, Chair Massage Therapy, Fall Risk Assessments, Hearing Screenings, Osteoporosis/Bone Density Screenings and many more.

A. Jazz In Motion
Jazz-In-Motion is a non-impact, dance based aerobics class that combines dancing, light weight training, mat conditioning and yoga style stretching; all choreographed to various music selections.  The focus is on the overall body, emphasizing balance, core strength, cardio-conditioning and just plain fun fitness.
 
B. Aromatherapy
This workshop will include how to safely use essential oils and the scientific reasons why they relieve stress. Learn how each oil should be used as you try them.
 

C. Chair Yoga
Using yoga movements in a seated exercise, chair yoga is a modified yet effective way to teach mental and physical fitness.  Like classic yoga, it’s designed to increase flexibility, reduce stress, and improve balance. You’ll recognize classic yoga poses and experience profound stress release through guided relaxation, breathing techniques, and visualization.
 
D. Making Healthy Choices
Making healthy choices while eating at home, dining at a restaurant or shopping at the super market is not easy.  A bland salad is not your only option!  There are other savory foods you can choose that won’t sabotage your waistline.  Learn how to stick to your diet by making simple food substitutions that are healthy, nutritional, and yes, tasty!
 
E. Stress Management Through Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
The goal of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is to create a rich and meaningful life, while learning to make room for the pain that inevitably goes with it.  “ACT” therapy is about taking action in response to life’s challenges.  Learn how to “ACT” more effectively in stressful situations.
 
 F. Viruses—Its in Your Hands
Learn how to keep your family safe while handling and preparing food.  This workshop will heighten your awareness of food safety by providing information about proper hand washing and food borne viruses.

A. Zumba
Once you hear that Latin beat you won’t be able to stop.  A great way of burning calories and having fun, working at your own level.
 
B. Moving Through Wellness, Tai Chi for Balance and Postural Wellness
This gentle exercise program has the potential to reduce pain and stiffness, while improving balance and flexibility.  Its agile steps and gentle range of motion exercise are done in a higher stance than those found in other Tai Chi styles, making it easier and more comfortable to learn.  Proper breathing technique and body awareness are also important elements of the class, which can be done seated, standing or a combination of both.
 
C. Be Prepared for an Emergency
Are you and your family prepared for an emergency?  Whether its hurricane, flood, blizzard, chemical spill or some other natural or man-made disaster; taking action to be prepared is critical.  Learn how to assemble an emergency kit, where to go for reliable
information during an emergency and how to create a personal action plan for you and your family.  We’ll also discuss evacuation plans and what to bring to a shelter.
 
D. Eating Right on a Budget
Eating right doesn’t have to cost more.  Get tips on how to stretch your food budget, while still preparing delicious, healthy meals.
 
E. Importance of Annual Check Ups
Learn the importance of seeing your doctor regularly, even if you are not sick.  This workshop will discuss preventative care for both men & women, in order to prevent illness and maintain good health.
 
F. New Face, New You
Learn the cutting edge advances in Facial Cosmetic Surgery for a fresh, new look. The doctor will discuss using minimally invasive techniques
 
G. The Importance of Breakfast
Mornings are always hurried, no time to make the kids breakfast?  Studies have shown that kids perform better in school, learn more easily and are less disruptive if they have breakfast.  Join us as we explore the importance of kids participating in a school breakfast program.
