Give the Gift of Service: Serv-A-Tray Program Needs Volunteers

Drivers needed to deliver meals in Paulsboro, West Deptford, Woodbury

(West Deptford, NJ) – The Gloucester County Division of Senior Services is looking for volunteer drivers to help deliver meals to senior citizens and homebound residents in the areas of Paulsboro, West Deptford and Woodbury.

The Gloucester County Serv-A-Tray program provides hot, nutritious noon time meals to eligible county residents delivered Monday through Friday and provides frozen meals for the weekends and holidays.

Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger said, “Becoming a Serv-A-Tray driver would be a wonderful holiday gift to give back to the community or New Year’s resolution for people to make this year. Volunteers are the heart of this program and the county could not operate Serv-A-Tray without them.”

Drivers are reimbursed for their mileage because “we don’t want the price of gas to keep people from volunteering to help serve meals,” Damminger said.

There are approximately 75 volunteers that deliver meals throughout the county and each driver delivers about 20 meals a day.  The program is looking for 5 new volunteer drivers.  Over 1825 meals are delivered a week through the program.

“Anyone who can spare and hour or two a day should consider becoming a Serv-A-Tray volunteer,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Warren S. Wallace, liaison to Senior Services who administers the Serv-A-Tray program.

Deputy Director Warren Wallace said, “Sometimes the Serv-A-Tray volunteer is the only human contact the recipients will get in a day.  It is a vital service and that is provided, both physically and spiritually.  The volunteers find their time very rewarding.”
