Transportation & Highway Planning

The Transportation and Highway Planning Section is involved in the development of a comprehensive and continuous transportation planning process at the county level. Major funding is made available through the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (SAFETEA-LU).

Our Activities Include

  • Seeking federal and state funding to improve and construct highways, bridges and intersections.
  • Preparing the annual Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). The TIP is an on-going multi-year program for all transportation improvements for which federal aid is requested from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT). Projects that do not appear on the TIP will not be considered for federal funding.
  • Coordinating efforts to implement the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) program, which is the application of advanced technologies in an integrated manner for use in the operation of transportation systems.
  • Planning for highway facilities to ensure the efficient movement of people and goods.
  • Conducting studies of transportation corridors to identify needed transportation improvements.
  • Serving on the DVRPC Board Policy Analysis Committee regarding policy, planning and budget evaluation as well as the DVRPC (RTC) Regional Transportation Committee, which deals with regional transportation issues; such as the region's long-range 2030 Long Range Plan Transportation and Land Use Plan, the Transportation Planning Work Program and the TIP.
  • Preparing and updating the Official County Map which establishes future right-of-way and roadway widths for all county highways.
  • Developing a GIS database which links on-going traffic count program data to a countywide electronic roadway map.
  • Acting as a resource center to provide regional linkage for transportation agencies and policies.
