Rabies is a communicable disease that is passed from infected animals to humans. The infected animal bites or scratches a person transmitting the disease. Luckily rabies is relatively rare in dogs and cats, however rabies is present in bats and in recent years has been found in wild animals such as raccoons. Rabies is a reportable disease.
