Ann Hill, teacher-librarian, from Washington Township High School was chosen 2009-2010 Gloucester County Teacher of the Year!

Scott Bassler, senior at Woodbury Junior-Senior High School, is among the 50,000 highest scorers on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.  There were over 1.5 million students who took the test nationally.  He is in the top 5% of test-takers.

Delsea senior, Krishore Holloway of Newfield, was honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.
 
Kingsway Regional senior, Patrick C. Lewis, was named Commended Student in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.  Patrick was recognized for his exceptional academic promise.  He placed in the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students nationwide who took part in the PSAT Test.

Allison DiSilvestro and Magdelen Lind, third grade students at Sewell School, received writing awards from Barnes and Noble for their essays on the topic, “How My Teacher Has Helped Me Learn.”

Clearview Regional Marching Band won the U.S. Scholastic Band Association State Championship for 2008.  The band is under the direction of Tom Maioriello.

The 28th Annual Coriell Science Fair was held at Camden County College this past March.  Aura School had ten students participate.  Several students were recognized for their achievements.  One earned Honorable Mention in Chemistry, two earned third place in Physical Science, and two earned second place in Physical Science.  Two students also went on to participate in the Delaware Valley Science Fair!

The Swedesboro-Woolwich District grade 5 Mock Trial Team received an award for its second place finish in the statewide competition held at the New Jersey Bar Foundation Law Center in New Brunswick this past April 2009.

Glenn Howard, Paulsboro High School football coach, was presented with the Good Sportsmanship Demonstrated by the Players, Coaches and School Community Award, from the Edward G. Meyer South Jersey Chapter of the NJFOA for the 2008 football season.

Alexandra R. Cooke, a June graduate of Clearview Regional High School, had her first book published, entitled “Compulsion.” 

Allison Pfrommer and Evan Krechmer of Delsea Regional High School were recipients of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award for 2008-2009.

Washington Township High School Science Teacher, Amy Carpinelli, has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists in the Shell Science Teaching Award Program. 

The Williamstown High School DECA Chapter will be recognized at the New Jersey State Career Development Conference and the International DECA Conference for their initiative, “Students Tackling Autism Research.”

The Deptford Township School District was presented with the Safety District of the Year Award by the Gloucester, Cumberland, and Salem school districts’ Joint Insurance Fund.  The honor was also accompanied by a $1,500 award for purchasing safety supplies and equipment.

Glassboro Public Schools has earned a 2008 Safety Award from the New Jersey School Boards’ Association Insurance Group.  They are just 1 of 32 districts in the State to receive this award from more than 300 districts.

Woodbury Schools has received a $22,000 grant from Verizon, which will be used to purchase more licenses for their computer-based reading program.

Chestnut Ridge Science teacher, Karen Carola, was recognized as the Wal-Mart Corporation “Teacher of the Year.”  The school received a $1,000 check from Wal-Mart. 

Mrs. Claudia Buck, Language Arts Literacy middle school teacher in Deptford Township, achieved National Board Certification.

The Swedesboro-Woolwich District grade 3 Robotics Team received the Inquiring Minds trophy at the University of Delaware Robotics State Championship in January 2009.

This year Elk Township School District again received the Annual Safety Incentive Award for achieving the highest levels of local safety awareness by the Joint Insurance Fund.  The school district has received this award for the last three years!

National Park received a $5,000 grant for their Grade Six Environmental Program from Coke and Recycle Bank.

Beginning in 2010, the partnership with GCIT and Gloucester County College enables their Academy students to graduate with a minimum of 30 college credits.

Pitman WCK Walls Elementary School and Cynthia Leiby, for receiving the 7th Annual Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation Award.  The award recognizes music teachers who best emulate the personal characteristics and dedication of “Mr. Holland,” portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss in the hit 1995 movie.

Wendy Baker, Suzie Castro and Sue Clark, teachers from Centre City School, were nominated by NJEA for national recognition for their efforts in the AYUDA project which raises funds for our sister school in the Dominican Republic.

Nina Azulo and Shannon Pizzuta, teachers in the Deptford Township Schools, for being awarded Target Field Trip Grants.

Carl Cox, music teacher at Deptford High School, performed on January 19 with Tribeca Grand at the Pennsylvania Democrats’ “Oh Yes We Did” Inauguration Celebration at the Washington Plaza Hotel in D.C. and on January 20th played his saxophone with R&B/Soul artist Maysa at the Inaugural concert at Lincoln Theater.

Members of Delsea Regional High School’s band auditioned and were selected as members of the 2008-2009 All-South Jersey Symphonic Band and Orchestra; congratulations Chris Larrea, Sara Smith, Ryan McCausland, and Malcolm Homeyer. 

Gateway Regional High School won this year’s Consumer Bowl sponsored by the County Office of Consumer Protection and the State Office of Consumer Affairs.  Five schools competed:  Gateway, Glassboro, West Deptford, Woodbury and GCIT.  West Deptford was the second highest scoring team.

Washington Township High School was named 1 of 7 high schools in the State to be recognized with a Five-Star Exemplary Technology Education Program award from the New Jersey Technology Education Association.

Paulsboro High School students, Cory Gilcrest received 1st Place and Jennifer Loy received Honorable Mention in the Gloucester County Soil Conservation District Poster Contest.

Gateway Regional received the International Technology Education Association’s Program Excellence Award.

West Deptford student, Kevin Bond, was honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.  This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to service their communities and their Country.

Beginning in September 2009, every student at GCIT will be required to take a personal finance course by graduation. 

The Washington Township High School Varsity Cheerleaders captured the schools’ 10th consecutive Olympic Conference championship.

Delsea ROTC are Jersey Champs!  This is the first time that Delsea has placed first at the South Jersey Competition.  Good luck in the 2nd ROTC Brigade championship on March 28th!

Stephanie Palese and Kiah Benson, fifth grade students at J. Mason Tomlin School, were recognized as winners of the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey’s “Species on the Edge” contest.

The Swedesboro-Woolwich District grade 6 Robotics Team received the second place trophy during the Robotics Tournament in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and an outstanding performance medal at the University of Delaware this past January 2009.

Monongahela Middle School in Deptford was presented with a School Rewards Grant Allocation in the amount of $100,000.  This reward grant was made to 26 Title 1 schools across the State.  The school met the Federal Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) targets for two years in a row. 

The Logan School District received a New Jersey early Launch to Learning Grant for preschool expansion in the amount of $36,300; $1,000 grant from the National Gardening Association for expansion of the district’s elementary gardening club activities; and a school business partnership grant of $2,500 from ExxonMobil Corporation.

The East Greenwich School District was awarded a $5,000 grant from RecycleBank “Green Schools” Program for District “Wild Site” initiatives.

The Coriell Institute for Medical Research held their 28th Annual Science Fair recently at Camden County College.  Students from Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties participated.  Gateway Regional High School students received the following awards:

The Miracle Field debuted September 8th at Bankbridge Regional School.  The field has character and amenities that most fields for children do not - artificial turf, dugouts and a scoreboard. 

The Deptford High School Jazz Ensemble placed 2nd at the All-State NJAJE Division III Championship on April 24th.  A member of the ensemble was also awarded the best trombone player in the New Jersey Division III. 

NJEA Best Practices in Professional Development Award winners were Gloucester County Special Services School District and Clearview Regional High School.

Chris Anderson, from Gateway Regional High School, has won a $1,000 grant from General Motors and Discovery Education to implement imaginative classroom lessons focusing on sustainability. 

Tom Healy, Pitman High School senior, is now an Eagle Scout.  His project was the renovation of the Edgemore Field Little League building.

Eight Deptford High School students were award winners in the 2009 Regional Competition for the Future Business Leaders in America.  Congratulations to:

Governor Corzine announced the appointment of Camy Kobylinski, Washington Township, to the Commission on Bullying in Schools.

In the Westville School District, students in grades K-6 will take part in the Parkview Pacers mileage club during recess, selected P.E. Classes, and/or during class free time.  As students walk, run or jog around the pond at their own pace, the number of laps they complete is recorded.  For every 2 miles they complete (accumulation of 8 laps around the pond), students receive a toe token to wear on their shoe laces.  Students receive special toe tokens and certificates as they accumulate 25, 50, 75, even 100 miles during the school year.  When students complete 25 miles, they receive neck chains to hold their many tokens!

Bells Elementary School third grader, Zach Sekel, won three new computers and a printer for his school by providing a question used for the Fox Show, “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” The question:  If you add the number of sides of a rectangle to the number of sides of a pentagon, which number do you get?

Clayton High School senior, John Connelly, received a Young Voices Foundation award for his fictional short story about a young boy who missed the opportunity to appreciate the accomplishments of an older relative.

Karen Richards, Speech/Language Pathologist at Glassboro’s Dorothy L. Bullock School, has earned her third award for Continuing Education from the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

Deptford High School has been named High School of the Year for Gloucester County by the American Red Cross Blood Services Penn-Jersey Region.  The school will receive the award at the 11th Annual All High School Event sponsored by the American Red Cross.

Elk Township School District received an award from the State of New Jersey’s 81st Annual Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Award’s Program.  This is a recognition award presented to the employees of Elk Township Board of Education for outstanding performance during the school year.

East Greenwich School District partnered with two Rutgers University Grants for Science/Environmental Instruction for Grades K-6 “Rain Garden” Project and “Project Wet”

Washington Township High School has been tabbed as a Model School in the Arts by the New Jersey Arts Education Partnership (NJAEP).  The high school administration will be presented an award of recognition at the Board of Education meeting in June 2009.

The Gloucester County Bar Foundation awarded three $1,000 scholarships, out of a pool of 50, to the following students at their annual Law Day Observance dinner in May:

Kelly Miraglia of Kingsway Regional received $100 for the essay portion of the competition and Leila Abu-Orf of Pitman High School was the first recipient of a new $500 scholarship named in the honor of Superior Court Judge Robert Francis.
