Lynne MacLuskie, Life Sciences teacher from West Deptford Middle School, was chosen 2010-2011 Gloucester County Teacher of the Year!

Katharyn Nicolle, a senior at Gateway Regional High School, was one of only 312 outstanding young students Nationwide selected to receive the Achievement Community Scholarship Award.

David Riebel from GCIT was the Gloucester County recipient of the 2009 NJAC Foundation and PSE&G Foundation Green Scholarship.  The award is given to a student who wishes to continue their education in the “green technologies of tomorrow.”
 
Joshua Kalb, Deptford High School Social Studies teacher, was named as one of the 2009-2010 recipients of the Joseph Berkman and Michael and Sara Chipkin Holocaust/Genocide Studies Scholarships.

Paulsboro High School has been selected as one of only 33 Professional Learning Communities Lab Schools.

Woodbury and Washington Township received $500,000 in Federal funding to help train teachers in the area of history.

Glassboro Board of Education received a grant from the New Jersey School Boards’ Association Insurance Group for safety and security improvements.  They received $14,546.

Williamstown High School won the NJSIAA State Group IV Softball Championship game!

Green Fields Elementary third grader,  Anthony Masino, was commended by Detective Chambers of the West Deptford Police Department, for playing a key role in solving a serious crime. 

Washington Township High School was designated a Model School in the Arts for the exceptional excellence in Arts Education.

The Kiwanis Club of Woodbury sponsored HOBY Ambassadors to attend the Foundation Leadership Seminar this summer.  Congratulations to Zoe Mowl of Woodbury, Marquis Cooper of GCIT, and Carissa Oliveri of Paulsboro High School.

Glassboro High School received the ShopRite Cup for having the best athletic program in Group 1.

Greenwich Township Schools received a $4,400 Safety grant by the New Jersey School Boards’ Association Insurance Group.  The grant was given for the district’s commitment to risk management. 

Ten teachers at Evergreen Avenue School in Woodbury were awarded $100 certificates from Walmart as part of their Teacher Reward Program to help teachers purchase necessary school supplies.  Congratulations to:  Susan Kudless, Eileen Whitman,  Lauren Stankewicz, Christine Abdallah, Suzanne Mazymuk,  Mark Grundel, Trinna Savage, Jake Lessman, Paige Lyons and Amanda Dube!

Washington Township High School has been seected to participate in the New Jersey Department of Education initiative, “New Jersey’s Model for High School Reform in World Languages; Building a Linguistically and Culturally Competent Workforce.”

GCIT was awarded $5,000 for their leadership efforts as an Academy High School by the National Academy Foundation.

Clayton High School was ranked among the best high schools in the United States by U.S. News and World Report.

Eileen Wolf, Art teacher at Central Early Childhood Center in Deptford, was one of 1,000 teachers across the Nation awarded $1,000 of classroom supplies by the Deptford OfficeMax Store as part of its “Day Made Better” program.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Stewardship Initiative recognized Swedesboro-Woolwich Board of Education for its efforts to improve the environment for green building implementation, water use reduction, and materials reduction.

Glassboro School District was recognized by the New Jersey School Boards’ Association for a 2009 School Leader Award for their program “Real Men Read,” that aims at jump-starting elementary boys’ literacy skills.

Washington Township received a merit award in audiovisual media for its “40th Anniversary Bells Elementary” program.  They also received honorable mention for its “Math Anxiety” and “Washington Township High School Forensic Course” programs.

The Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders recently honored the GCIT Student Chapter of SkillsUSA for their development of a “Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program.”

The Deptford Central Early Childhood Center Spartan Marching Band and the Cheerleading Squad in Deptford Township were recipients of Walmart grants totaling $5,500.

E.J. String, fifth-grader at J. Mason Tomlin School in Mantua, was selected as one of three young authors to have their short stories published at the end of Lisa Funair-Willever’s latest book, “Nicky Fifth’s Passport to the Garden State.”

Deptford Township Board of Education received the 2008-2009 Safety Basic Award of $500 by the Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem School District Joint Insurance Fund, and received a Certificate of Excellence in recognition of outstanding performance in claims management.  Special congratulations to Betty Crate, Administrative Secretary to the Business Administrator for being awarded the JIF Safety Star of the Year.

The Washington Township High School Band took first place at the 2009 USSBA Northern States Championship in Allentown, PA.

Diane Maholik, Swedesboro-Woolwich Preschool Disabilities teacher, was selected as the Teacher of the Year for the Paulsboro-Swedesboro Lodge 157 Free and Accepted Masons.  She received a plaque and a check for $100.  She will now represent Lodge 157 for the opportunity to become the State Teacher of the Year in the spring.

Seven Glassboro High School seniors have received $1,000 Urban Scholars awards from the New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority based on high class rank and SAT scores.  Congratulations to:

Delsea Regional High School’s Future Farmers of America Club members took home three first place awards, a second place, and a third place at the 29th New Jersey Annual Southern Regional Flower Show at the Deptford Mall.

Paul Morina, Principal of Paulsboro High School, received two honors at the State Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic City; one for 500 wins and one for 25 years of coaching.

Woodbury Schools received a $20,000 grant from the Public Service Enterprise Group Foundation to the United Way of Gloucester County.  The schools now have eight new computers available to students.

Marc Feaster and Vincent Zinni, GCIT students, for being selected by the New Jersey Association of Counties Foundation and Wal-Mart, for a new internship program aimed at teaching green energy technology.

Glassboro Intermediate School placed first in the 27th Annual MATHCOUNTS South Jersey Regional Competition held at Rowan University, repeating their performance from 2009.

Clearview Regional High School students were acknowledged for their accomplishments in the Technology Students Association state competition at The College of New Jersey

Adele Taylor, Williamstown High School freshman, started a company to promote literacy and donated books to the school.  Her company, Adele’s Literacy Program, a non-profit company, collected more than 1,500 books and 6,500 bookmarks and donated them to daycare centers, schools, libraries and other charitable organizations throughout the area.

Washington Township’s Orchard Valley Middle School has been awarded a $1,000 “Be the Beat” grant from Medtronic Foundation in conjunction with the American Heart Association, one of 150 middle and high schools in the Country to receive funding.

Gateway Regional High School seniors, Michael Atkinson and Raymond Kowalski, achieved coveted Eagle Scout status.  They are members of Troop 74, Woodbury.  The two scouts helped to restore parts of Glen Lake in Woodbury Heights.

 Washington Township High School Student Paper received awards from the Garden State Scholastic Press Association for their efforts in the 2008-2009 school year including an Honorable Mention for Overall Excellence in the A Division for large schools.

Glassboro Intermediate School placed first in the 27th Annual Math Counts South Jersey Regional Competition held at Rowan University.  Congratulations to coach Suzanne Carson and team:  Carolyn Provine, Lauren Yan, Autumn Brown, and Michael Graham.

Clearview Middle School took second place and the right to join Glassboro representing South Jersey in the state competition.  The Clearview Team is coached by Loretta Hayward and team:  Quinn Grossman, Eric Hitchner, Joshua Apostoli and Jonathan Law.

Three Delsea Regional High School winter track athletes were honored by being selected for the 1st Team All South Jersey  by both the South Jersey Track Coaches Association and the Courier Post.  Sean McPherson was honored for his performance in the 55 meter dash while Janiece Rose was selected for the Shop Put and Brianna Crofton was named as the All-Purpose Performer for 2010.  In addition, winter track coach and Social Studies teacher, Ron Flaim, was named Coach of the Year by the South Jersey Track Coaches Association. 

Chelsea Pedano, Woodbury High School, and  Brandon Guerra, Deptford High School, were chosen to perform with The Sound of America Honor band and Chorus  when it tours in Europe this summer. 

Lola Adesanya of Clearview Regional High School has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.  The award was presented by the Prudential Spirit of Community Program. 

The Paulsboro High School Wrestling Team received the following honors at the Region 7&8 Awards Dinner on April 15, 2010:

South Jersey Sectional Group 1 Champions
New Jersey State Group 1 Champions
The Courier Post Cup (#1 team in South Jersey)
Region 8 Sportsmanship Award

Three members of the team were also honored:

Joe Duca – Region 8 Champion, New Jersey State Champion, and Philadelphia Inquirer South Jersey Wrestler of the Year
Zach Greenwald – Region 8 Champion and New Jersey State Champion.

Washington Township High School Band was honored for playing in the new Dallas Cowboys’ Stadium and for being named in the “Grand Champion Status.”  They also performed during the pregame show of the Cotton Bowl game.

Emily Banks, Delsea Regional High School student and Franklinville resident, was chosen among nine other songwriting finalists from Gloucester County and Camden County for the Changing Our World Project’s, “Write a Song 4 Social Change” contest.  Her song will be professionally recorded at Robert Wynn Productions in Gloucester Township.

Twenty-one students won recognition for their original poetry in the Third Annual Spirit of Renaissance Poetry competition held on April 24 at the Lawnside Public School.  The theme was “I Know My Soul” taken from the poem by Claude McKay. 

More than 96 poems received from students in Camden and Gloucester counties were    reviewed and scored by Napalm and Sandra Turner-Barnes, Executive Director of the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission.  Nine first through third place winners were selected for 5th through 7th  grades, 8th through 10th grades, and 11th through 12th grades.  Twelve honorable mentions were awarded in the three divisions.

The poems will be published by the Society later this year in an anthology with 2008 and 2009 prize-winning works. 

The Washington Township High School Junior Varsity Cheerleading Squad finished in first place at the recent New Jersey State Championship hosted in Trenton.  The school’s varsity squad, which recently extended its dominance in the sport by capturing the school’s 11th consecutive Olympic Conference Championship, placed second in the event.

Chestnut Ridge Middle School eighth grade student, Dylan Lambe, had his poem, “Marching Through Fire,” which he penned as a seventh grade student last April, published in the 2009 book compilation of the America Library of Poetry entitled “Inspired.”  His entry was selected from thousands for publication. 

The following students received honors by the Gloucester County Bar Association:

Emily Malfitano, GCIT, received a $500 check as the winner of their Annual Essay Contest.          The theme this year was, “Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges.”

The association also presented its $500 Judge Robert Francis Scholarship to Brianna DeWitt of Pitman High School and honored Kingsway_Regional High School as the winner of its mock trial competition.

Winners of the 14th Annual Consumer Bowl Southern Regional Competition.  Also, students were Bronze Medal Winners at the 2010 State Consumer Bowl.

The trumpet section of the Deptford Township High School Jazz Ensemble, Ken Mesner, Henry Grabbe, Max Turner, and Andrew Rueblinger, named best in New Jersey at the New Jersey Association of Jazz Education’s Annual State Jazz Competition.

Dominic Simoni, Mike McInyre, Jessica Wienckoski and Mitchell Luckman, 6th graders at Mantua’s J. Mason Tomlin School, for writing the e-book on recycling.  The students worked with the Goodwill Industries and Dell Computer to have their collection handled in an environmentally safe way.
